Janey’s September Letter: Happy (very different) Birthday to Me!

Opening the front door today I noticed a trail of smartly ( for the moment ) dressed young boys and girls, and their mummies – back on the morning-march again!

No longer having young children I hadn’t thought about the beginning of the school year, so today came as quite a shock!

I’m not going to pretend I miss the scrabble of getting the kids sorted (and in a reasonable mood) and making the first day back in time for the bell  – and as I looked at all those harassed looking women pounding the pavements with their reluctant offspring in tow, it was great to come back in and take my tea, Ted, and laptop back to bed.

I thought about the old days and how, rather like the beginning of the year, we make lots of resolutions for when ‘they’ go back and our life’s our own again.

No longer having young children I hadn’t thought about the beginning of the school year, so today came as quite a shock!

Grown up lunches with friends, new hairdo’s, getting fit and of course slim  – as well as getting the Christmas list written and all the gifts wrapped up and hidden away before October!

Maybe not all of these things are achieved, but we must hope and try, as that is what, in my opinion, keeps us ‘on the right side’  and avoiding the slide into tracksuit bottoms and trainers all day long!

These last few months have been quite ‘memorable’ for me in many ways. Babies, weddings, holidays and then my diagnosis of MS.

All in all a whirlwind of emotions, which when dwelt upon give rise to optimistic new beginnings;  Pondering on mine, I decided to make a call to Peter Jones and request an appointment with the wonderful Georgina – personal shopper extraordinaire!

I’ve not really LOVED clothes shopping since I was a girl.  In the days when anything grabbed from a trendy boutique looked amazing it was fun – but these days it takes a little more care and effort, which is sometimes hard to make.

We all know it’s so much nicer going out and about when we feel good about ourselves,  and rather like baking cakes when there’s a really fab bakery next door, why do the slog when you’re feeling a bit weary, when instead you can sit down and explain to a lovely girl exactly how you’d like to look – and voila!

I think I’m doing this because it’s my birthday on Thursday and we all planning a jolly good night out.  Normally we go to a really fab restaurant for lots of champagne and a good laugh with all the people I love.

This year is even more exciting than last as I shall be celebrating with two new people I really love – my new grandbabies India and Fred!  All of this is so life affirming and amazing as last year when …gosh I can’t even remember what we did now – we certainly never knew about them!

I believe this life is fantastic if you try to see the positives.  I’m not saying that it is always easy, but I think that when we look for a hidden blessings in the middle of adversity we’re often able to see them, and despite the fact that I’m no longer going to be going clubbing after dinner on Thursday – I shall be in even better company than I was last year and what a treat that’s going to be!
