Essential ‘Post-Workout’ Skincare

Your skin needs care after a workout at every age to remain supple and healthy

What oils/products/ingredients should you avoid directly after a workout? 

Skin is extra sensitive following a workout, so you should avoid any retinol, vitamin C, oils, and any active products.

Also, as tempting as it may be to take makeup remover wipes to the gym you should stay clear of alcohol-based face wipes, which can overstimulate leading to an overproduction of oil.

If your skin builds up too much oil, it can result in breakouts and other skin concerns. 

Save your active and potent ingredients for bedtime and use a gentle cleanser after work out.

You should also stay away from cleansers that contain sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate, as these ingredients can overly dry the skin. 

What ingredients will cool down the skin? 

A simple face mist or toning spray is great post-workout as it will hydrate as well as refresh the skin.

Look out for ingredients such as tea tree which can have powerful antibacterial properties – other ingredients to look out for are chamomile and lavender extracts as they can help soothe any potential irritation that may have built up as a result over over-sweating. 

How should you clean your skin after a workout?

Wash your face after your workout or wherever you break a sweat with a gentle facial cleanser to help wash away any dirt, oil, and bodily fluids clinging to your skin, affecting its pH, and clogging your pores which can lead to breakouts.

Equally, it is important to remove your makeup prior to a workout where you may break into a sweat.

If you have sensitive or inflamed skin, use a light moisturiser with skin-soothing properties such as green tea or cucumber seed oil – this will help to reduce any redness and irritation. 

Whats the one thing never to put on your skin post workout? 

Your skin will be more sensitive and inflamed after your work out so it is best to wash your face with a gentle cleanser, apply sunscreen if you’re going outdoors and ensure you save your active skincare (anti-acne and anti-ageing) for bedtime.

Avoid anything oil based or with potent ingredients to avoid breakouts and/or irritation.
